Description
"I believe that the city is not prepared to receive so many people," says Juan Fierro, director of a migrant shelter in Ciudad Juarez on Mexico's border with the United States. Amid president-elect Donald Trump's plans for the largest deportation of migrants in US history, fears are growing on the other side of the border as to what this may mean for Mexican cities and for the migrants still hoping to cross.
Trump has vowed to declare an immigration national emergency when he takes office in January, and use troops to round up and expel the country's estimated 13 million undocumented migrants. Mexico's new President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country has an agreement with the Biden administration under which non-Mexicans crossing into the United States from Mexico without papers are sent directly back to their countries of origin, and she hopes this will continue with Trump.
