Molodova's pro-Moscow separatist region of Transnistria has been plunged into an energy crisis after Russia halted its gas supplies on January 1 over a debt dispute with the Moldovan government. Residents in areas under Moldovan control have also been caught up in the fight, facing power cuts or forced to burn wood for warmth. "Now we can only heat two rooms," says pensioner Valera Alexandru Sava.
