For close to four years, Irina Schastnaya did not see her son grow up because she was in prison in Belarus. "Until the last moment, I thought I wouldn't be released," she says, after finally being pardoned by the Belarusian president in 2024. For her part, Daria Afanasyeva, arrested in 2021 and also released in 2024, says that solidarity among inmates enabled her to endure her two and a half years of imprisonment and that "all possible means" must be used to get those still in prison out. Both released in 2024, the two women left Belarus for Poland, where they now live. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
