Description
Military gear, RPGs and Farsi-language flags and documents reportedly left behind by Iran-backed militias litter the floor at the notorious Tadmur prison in Palmyra. Residents tell AFP the jail, blown up by the Islamic State group in 2015, has since been used by Iran-backed groups that propped up the government of now toppled leader Bashar al-Assad. The Tadmur prison was for decades a symbol of abuses meted out on government opponents. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
