Description
Wrangler and Levi's jeans roll off the production line, not at an American enterprise but at the East African-based United Aryan factory, on the outskirts of Kenya's capital Nairobi. It exists for one reason: the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a 25-year-old US law that gives duty-free access to thousands of goods made on the continent, particularly clothes. The deal is set expire in September 2025, unless US President Donald Trump agrees to extend it- a decision putting hundreds of thousands of African jobs on a knife-edge. "We have a community of 150,000 people who directly, indirectly depend on us," says the factory's CEO, Pankaj Bedi. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
