Description
An artificial ice climbing wall opens in a Czech village. Sub-zero temperatures have allowed dozens of ice climbers to try their skills on the 45-metre-high rock covered with ice. First opened 16 years ago, the wall in the central Czech village of Vir can be used by 17 climbers simultaneously, with another 17 securing them on the ground. The climbers must wear helmets and crampons and have at least basic climbing skills. The organisers hang metal mesh on the rock and pour water on it when it gets cold enough. The mesh catches the water which then freezes, forming the climbing wall. The Vir wall is booked until March 9 and the organisers hope the ice will last until then. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
