Baba Mondi, spiritual and religious leader, envisions a Vatican-like state within the Albanian capital for his Bektashi faith. Albania’s prime minister last year announced plans to establish the sovereign Muslim microstate within its borders run by the Sufi sect with roughly 100,000 members. Some of Bektashism’s key leaders arrived in Albania after being banned in Turkey in the early 20th century and Bektashi Muslims are now the fourth largest religious community in the country.
