Indigenous communities in Colombia have taken control of the international Rumichaca Bridge on the border with Ecuador, allowing only intermittent pedestrian passage while blocking vehicle traffic. Members of the Los Pastos, Quillasingas and Awa communities blocked the bridge for three days to protest against alleged abuses by the Ecuadorian army in its fight against drug trafficking. "The Armed Forces [of Ecuador] have caused significant damage within the community and we are showing our solidarity by accompanying them in this huge appeal to the Colombian and Ecuadorian governments", says Alvaro Natib, leader of the Yascual community in Colombia.
