If US President Donald Trump enacts his tariff plans, KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk says "we could easily reach the highest effective tariff rate since 1936 by the beginning of 2026." The consequences, she says, could include diminished demand, higher costs, layoffs, and retaliation from other countries. "We have a lot of moving parts, a lot of policies happening at once," Swonk says.
