Description
A heavy police presence and fences are deployed in Istanbul's symbolic Taksim square after authorities banned demonstrations in the city for four days as a way of preventing protests following the arrest of mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. Turkish police detained Imamoglu over a corruption probe in a move denounced by the main opposition CHP party as a "coup". The mayor is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, and his arrest comes days before he was to be named the party's candidate for the 2028 presidential election. IMAGES
