Description
One person died and five people were hospitalized after an active shooter situation at a New Albany warehouse Tuesday night, according to Police Chief Greg Jones.
Jones said there were about 150 people inside the KDC/One facility at 8825 Smiths Mill Rd. North when the shooting occurred around 10:20 p.m.
Police have not yet released information on the conditions of those hospitalized. A Mount Carmel spokesperson said three of the injured people are hospitalized at Mount Carmel East.
Jones said police have the identity of a person of interest, but they are not in custody and authorities are searching for them. It's unclear if they are an employee at the facility. There's no motive at this point, but Jones added that it appears to be a targeted type of attack. Police did not identify the person of interest.
"This has been a very tragic situation. Our thoughts go out to the victims, their families and everybody that works at this facility. This is something that we hoped would never happen in our community, but we prepare for it, and this is where we are now," Jones said.
Jones said police did recover a gun at the scene.
Smiths Mill Road North is currently blocked off and residents are asked to avoid the area.
