Description
People gathered outside the White House on Sunday as they reacted to President Joe Biden announcement that he was dropping his reelection bid against Donald Trump.
Biden made the announcement in a social media post that sent political shockwaves around the country and threw an element of turmoil into the election just months before voters go to the polls.
Some of those gathered outside the White House were Biden supporters who voiced their support for both the president and for Vice President Kamala Harris.
"The fact that he's someone who's willing to step aside from power, and not put himself first, (but) put the country first. I think it's a huge deal. And I think it just shows the type of leader he is," commented Washington, DC resident Kyle Lierman.
"I think my overwhelming feeling is just one of gratitude and gratitude for both for what an amazing president he's been. I think he's been one of the most impactful and effective. But also just gratitude for his entire career and how he has put country first, and is doing it again today," agreed another Washington, DC resident, Anne Filipic.
The feelings were not unanimous.
Michael Wille emphasized that he's not a Trump supporter, but he carried a sign that said "Bye Joe" and voiced anger about the events that led to the current uncertainty in the Democratic party and Sunday's events.
Biden's decision came on the heels of a poor debate performance that prompted many rank-and-file Democratic lawmakers to urge him to withdraw from the race.
The president said he will address the nation later this week “in more detail about my decision.”
Biden threw his support behind Harris to be the Democrats' new candidate, and she vowed to “earn and win” the nomination.
