Description
A police officer was fatally shot in northeast Ohio early Thursday morning.
During a press conference, Cleveland Police Chief Annie Todd did not release the officer’s name but said he was a 27-year-old man who had been with the police department for four years.
The shooting happened at East 80th Street near Wade Park in the Hough neighborhood of Cleveland. Police were called to the area around 1 a.m. after receiving a report of a man in the area who was wanted for felonious assault.
Chief Todd said officers attempted to confront the suspect, but he got out of the house and tried to leave the area on a bicycle. Officers then attempted to arrest the suspect when he brought out a firearm and fired it multiple times.
One of the bullets hit the 27-year-old officer, according to Chief Todd. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but he had no injuries. Chief Todd said his name will be released once charges are filed.
