Description
A zoo in Chile presented on Tuesday "Silverio," the third white rhinoceros calf born in South America.
The species is in danger of extinction. There are only about 10,080 left in the world.
The baby rhino was born on the 20th of June, and it already weighs almost a ton.
Silverio is the third baby of a couple of white rhinos Oliver and Hannah, who arrived at Buin Zoo in Santiago from South Africa in 2013 with the aim of being a contribution to the conservation of the species, representatives of the zoo said.
It is also the ninth rhino to be born in captivity worldwide in the last 12 months, making it a "tremendous contribution to the conservation" of this species, said the zoo's director and founder, Ignacio Idalsoaga.
After 12 days of being in confinement for medical monitoring, Silverio took his first steps into the outside world today and is “completely healthy,” although he will continue to be closely monitored by the team of veterinarians.
