Description
February 16, 18, 1968 Sixty of the world’s great professional athletes began their quest today for the 30,000-prize money in the Astro Jet Golf Classic at Rancho La Costa. San Diego Chargers quarterback John Hadl, who celebrated a birthday yesterday, discussed tee to green strategy with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith. Former baseball great Jackie Robinson warmed up on the putting green. The team of Hadl and Cleveland Indians manager Alvin Dark were co-favored in the tourney. New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle tried to pick up a few putting tips from the Chargers Speedy Duncan. American Football League champ Daryle La Monica, quarterback of the Oakland Raiders has a deft touch too... and an interested spectator...and Anaheim Angels manager, Bill Rigney, knows this is where the strokes are saved too. Saving the most strokes today were Mickey Mantle and George Andre with a thirteen under far best ball score of 59…tying the first day record of Biil Mazeroski and Paul Krause set last year...Mazeroski and Krause are tied for second at 61 with Jackie Robinson and Don Meredith, Son Santo and Jim Taylor.
A lot of teams were within catching-up distance of Mazeroski and Krause at the start of today's round. Bob Allison, third baseman with the Minnesota Twins, here sinking a beautiful 20-foot putt. Allison and Jerry Kramer wound up with a 202 total. But they were far behind the Mazeroski-Krause team, which
had a combined 8-under-par 64 today for a 3-round final total of 185.... that's 31-under par....Mazeroski
here tee-ing off on the tenth fairway... and Krause were one stroke ahead of Chicago White Sox Joe Horlen and Art Powell...tied at 186 who had a 61 today. Chicago Cubs Ron Santo and Jim Taylor. Santo and Taylor had a combined 62-today. For the winning Mazeroski-Krause twosome, 5-thousand dollars apiece.
