Renters here in California are just days away from receiving more legal protections. A new law will soon limit how much prospective tenants throughout the state and in San Diego County will have to come up with for their security deposit, which can often total several thousands of dollars. This new law goes into effect statewide on July 1, capping the amount a landlord can charge for a security deposit at just one month's rent. While already existing lease agreements will not be affected by this new law, tenants rights advocates say this will help increase access to housing for more Californians in an increasingly expensive rental market.
