Come join us for the ultimate backstage pass through the decades. When the biggest music stars came to San Diego CBS 8 cameras were there. And sometimes our reporters met the superstars. We’ve compiled some of the best interviews from our massive archive. In this News 8 Throwback special we’re going all the way back to the 1950s and 60s when our legendary anchor/reporter Harold Keen was the man on the scene—asking all the good questions. In 1958 he met the brothers Brubeck-Dave and Howard. In the 60s he met half of the British Invasion duo Peter and Gordon—Gordon Waller, and folk legends Pete Seeger and Joan Baez.
Backstage at a Beach Boys concert at the Sports Arena in 1976, Janine Tartaglia talked to Dennis Wilson. It was the last time Loggins and Messina would perform in San Diego and Gene Gleeson was there trying to figure out why the super popular duo would go their separate ways. Carol Kendrick met up with Alice Cooper when he arrived in San Diego at Lindbergh Field in 1979.
In 1981 Larry Himmel did a series on the music industry. Heart played at Jack Murphy Stadium and Larry got the backstage interview with Ann Wilson. San Diego born and raised singer songwriter Stephen Bishop talked about his experiences in the business. Barry Manilow sat down for an interview with Janet Zappala, discussing his popularity and what he believed to be the keys to his success. Loren Nancarrow was a big fan of Merle Haggard, and he got the plum assignment in 1985 when he met up with the country legend. Los Lobos was riding high off the success of the film La Bamba in 1987. Jody Hammond and caught their act at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano.
Finally, in 1991 Tim Flannery had a conversation about the music business with his good friend Jimmy Buffett.
