Description
July 1st is International Reggae Day – a celebration of the music born out of Jamaica that has influenced artists for generations. One father-son duo has dreamed of celebrating reggae culture, while also trying to find a cure for a genetic disease that has impacted their family. In 2005, Christian Hogan’s son Micah (now 22), was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare neuromuscular disease affecting roughly 1 in 5,000 male births.
The father and son duo felt the need to advocate to not only help accelerate a cure for Micah, but also all the affected young boys around the world. Together, they dreamed of starting a Reggae festival that would raise funds and awareness for Duchenne. Cali-RAD (California Reggae Against Duchenne) was born out of a shared love of Reggae music between a father and son.
The annual charity event benefits nonprofit CureDuchenne, whose mission is to find and fund a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This year, the second annual event will take place on September 2 at Beach House in San Diego, featuring live music, vendors, food, beer, and more. Visit www.caliradfest.com to purchase tickets.
