An ambitious new series was launched on TV 8 on this day. The idea was to broadcast live during the 11pm newscast. Not everyone was in their pajamas or in bed...they wanted to show what was happening around town at night, during the broadcast. Reporter Dave Cohen went live in sub control and chatted with producer Bob Sioss and director Steve Richards about their concerns. Anchor Tom Lawrence said the toughest part about live shots was getting all of his cables untangled. It must have been a bit scary but they all persevered and live shots became a regular part of daily newscasts.
Former chief photojournalist Tom Warren worked on many of these segments and shares his memories:
Quite a challenge finding somewhere new to go live from each night where we could get a shot out of. San Diego was pretty dead at 11pm in those days. A lot of bars. Often I had to shoot and edit another news story before going out on the live shot. In those days I think we only had two or three receive sites, (Soledad, Miguel and at some point the Home savings building downtown), so the microwave shots were often crazy bounce shots with long cable runs down the streets to get the truck in a spot where it would work. Fun times.
