Northern San Diego County looked like a scene from Currier and Ives…or maybe a Fresca commercial. Yes it snowed in downtown San Diego but most concentrated in the north county area. Two inches fell on Escondido, where at Escondido High School the physical education classes turned into snowball throwing sessions. It was quite a treat for the kids…many of whom had never seen snow right at the front door of their homes. There was a sudden population explosion in Escondido as snowmen began springing up. On her way to kindergarten, 5 1/2-year-old Annie Linthicum added a few pats to a snowman at 3rd and Broadway. Her father, city councilman George Linthicum, said the last time it snowed like this in Escondido was in January of 1949. In Fallbrook there was no school yesterday because the roads were too slippery for school buses to roll. Schools were also closed in the Julian and Mountain Empire districts. While the snowplows worked and the kids played, citrus and avocado growers in North County began to worry. County Agriculture Commissioner James Moon says it’s too early to know what effect the surprise storm will have on the groves. He told TV 8 news he doesn’t think the early morning snow will have too much effect on the crops, but that story could change with continued cold conditions. It may be several days before the full account of damage is totaled.
Love the Carnation truck.
