Thanksgiving Day in San Diego 1956
This is a wrap up of news events. Train station and Lindbergh Field arrivals. Elaborate holiday dinners were served to personnel of the armed forces at their bases. Five tons of turkey were cooked at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Families of servicemen were invited to dine with their husbands, even aboard some for the ships in the harbor. The Armed Services Y-USO climaxed a month-long program today by helping to secure dinner invitations for hundreds of service personnel. What would make 1,720 teenage girls line up for a movie at 5 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning? Why Elvis, that’s who. It was Presley’s first film "Love Me Tender" playing at the Orpheum Theater in Downtown San Diego. One girl carried a sign that proclaimed Elvis Presley was “the greatest thing since sliced bread.” CBS 8's original script says, “They screamed and swooned when Elvis made his appearance on the screen, and when the picture ended on a sad note, many left the theater in tears.” Elvis may not have been there but the young lady at the end of the clip is sure a sight to see - Bettie May Knapp appears in a handmade dress dedicated to The King of Rock and Roll. Perhaps she was president of his fan club?
Fifth grade students at State College campus lab school reenacted the first Thanksgiving Day. Girls and boys dressed as pilgrims and native Americans. They sat down to a bountiful dinner of turkey and venison.
At State College Pi Kappa Alpha sponsored the annual Turkey Trot, and to push their ticket sales, they erected a stock on campus and pledges were held prisoner until they made a ticket sale.
A fire at the home of Joe Lopez. 3913 Gaines Street.
Turkeys at the San Diego Zoo.
The one major community religious service was this gathering at the organ pavilion in Balboa Park. The annual service is sponsored by the county council of churches. Dr. Lester Bond presided…a choir from the Natval Training Center sand and the Reverend L. Jack Fix spoke on the theme, “Pray for Peace.”
