For those keen for action, the fourth running of the Torrey Pines Road Race took place north of La Jolla. The two-day event attracted an estimated 22,000 spectators. Although both motorcycles and racing autos took part in the races, the second motorcycle event was canceled when Fred Hepburn, 23, of Los Angeles, was killed when he was struck by a cycle that went out of control. Here’s the start of one of the action-packed events. One of the official judges was Michael Cavenaugh Gillette, consul general of England. Delicate timing devices are used to clock the drivers, and signals with flags indicate the number of laps remaining in the race. San Diego’s honor in the sports car ranks was upheld by Coronado’s Bill Pickford who won the 30-lap main event, and is kissed by the Mrs.
