Description
Construction workers take advantage of the calm sea to reinforce the concrete wall that has been protecting Chile's main port of San Antonio from the force of the sea for a century but that has been weakened over time by extreme swells.
"The aim of this project, and this is also important, is to mitigate the effects of the sea," says Jose Aldunate, San Antonio Port Construction Manager. Storms are becoming more frequent as sea levels and temperatures rise, according to the United Nations, leading to higher waves. This phenomenon forces ports to suspend operations for days or even months. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
