Description
Seattle residents will head to the polls on February 11, to vote on two competing propositions aimed at funding the city's social housing initiative. The special election comes two years after voters approved the creation of the Seattle Social Housing Developer.
Proposition 1A, backed by the grassroots campaign House Our Neighbors, proposes a new tax on businesses that pay individual employees more than $1 million annually. This measure is expected to generate about $50 million per year for social housing.
In contrast, Proposition 1B, supported by the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, suggests using $10 million annually for five years from existing city funds.
