As Southern California recovers from its costliest wildfire disaster, western Washington is fighting to prevent a similar catastrophe.
"It accelerated really quickly. I didn't even think it would reach us," said Dan O'Conner who ran from the fire overtaking his neighborhood on Jan. 7 in Los Angeles' Pacific Palisades neighborhood. "It was a fire storm; it was a tornado."
The devastating wildfire killed at least 29 people and destroyed thousands of structures, hitting homeowners particularly hard amid a growing insurance crisis where it’s harder to get and keep insurance due to wildfire risk.
"It is an example of what could happen here," warned Daucey Brewington of North Bend, who closely monitored the LA fires. After three decades in the Northwest, Brewington has witnessed firsthand the growing frequency and intensity of regional wildfires.
