Description
A first-of-its-kind nursery for drug-affected infants is underutilized while Washington state faces an increase in overdose deaths and near-deaths among children in state care, a KING 5 investigation has found.
The Pediatric Interim Care Center (PICC) in Kent was established in 1990 as the world's first specialized nursery for babies born with illegal drugs in their systems. Now, it operates well below capacity. The facility, which once housed 17 to 20 babies at a time, averages just three to five infants today.
"All these rooms were filled at one time," said Barbara Drennen, who founded PICC after decades as a foster mom. "Today, not so much."
