Description
Providence Swedish has numerous highly trained pediatricians and specialists providing personalized care for kids of all ages.
“One of the unique things that sets us apart is we provide care all the way from birth, up through pediatric life, until you turn 18, and even afterwards as an adult,” said Dr. Elizabeth Meade, pediatric medical director at Providence Swedish.
Swedish has one of the only Level 4 Neonatal ICUs in Washington, a pediatric inpatient unit and surgical and medical specialists.
“We also have a lot of services, like our child life specialists, that really are devoted to developmentally appropriate behavioral and emotional caregiving for the kids that are hospitalized,” Dr. Meade said.
It’s important to the providers at Swedish to keep kids comfortable in the hospital. With the exception of the NICU, all rooms are single occupancy, and parents are able to stay with their children.
Though a child’s care team can be large with a primary care doctor, nurses, specialists and other team members, Swedish does daily family-centered rounds to keep care organized.
“Each morning, the whole team walks around the unit and sees every patient and family face to face to make sure they can really get all of their questions answered with everybody there.”
Dr. Meade says it’s important to be honest with kids about what to expect when receiving care, and the Swedish team can help caregivers have age-appropriate conversations with them.
“I think kids really want to know what to expect, and sometimes we don’t do a great job at being super honest with them because we want to protect them,” she said.
The providers at Swedish are focused on open lines of communication and maintaining close relationships with one another to ensure the best care for kids.
“Because we are such a tight-knit team and we all work in the same physical space together and we know each other very well, the level of communication is just different,” Dr. Meade said.
Pediatric specialists see patients at Swedish’s First Hill campus, but also travel to Issaquah and Mill Creek to provide convenient care.
