Description
After years of debate, discussion and relationship-building, work is set to move forward on the restoration of Whiteman Cove, the last major fish barrier removal project attributed to the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) under a federal court ruling.
Leaders from DNR, the Squaxin Tribe and the YMCA'S Camp Colman, where the site is located, met Friday, June 28, to tour the camp and discuss impacts of the work and how they will be addressed.
"Our sacred salmon, our ancestors, come in here and feed and grow and we're playing a part in bringing them back to Puget Sound," said Squaxin Island Tribe Chairman Kris Peters during a tour of the site. "Even though there's potential conflict we've always felt coming together is the best way to overcome things."
