Description
Sports betting is gaining in popularity across the country. Here in Washington state, 22 of 29 federally recognized Indian tribes operate gaming facilities, and 14 of those tribes offer some form of sports betting.
Tana Russell, assistant director of Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling, says that while you may hear about sports betting a lot and see advertisements often, it’s important to know not everyone is gambling on sports.
“If you do bet on sports, it’s important to remember that this should not be treated as a supplement to your income, but rather just a form of entertainment,” Russell said.
Sports betting should be incorporated into your entertainment budget as a hobby and something fun to do with friends so it doesn’t become a problem.
Tribes have been working to implement responsible gambling programs across the state to address needs of both tribal members and non-tribal residents.
“Tribes have been working proactively to address responsible gaming by providing millions of dollars to our state for things like education and prevention, treatment, and wellness programs,” said Rebecca George, executive director, Washington Indian Gaming Association. “That hard work has been going on long before sports betting.”
Addressing signs of problem gambling early is key. If it goes beyond what you or a loved one has budgeted, seems to be taking up a great deal of time or is causing tension or arguments, it may be time to seek help. Services needed vary for each person, but there are many resources available.
If you or someone you love is struggling with sports betting or other forms of gambling, get 24/7 help, information and confidential referrals to free or low-cost treatment in Washington state by calling or texting 1-800-547-6133.
