It looks more like an empty ice rink right now, but those in the know see something very different. "This is opportunity," says Nick Hoekendorf. Hoekendorf works on the Everett waterfront, as do his longshoremen brothers and before them their father. Now, that opportunity is being realized. The new Norton Cargo Terminal at the Port of Everett is now open. "It's a relief to see it has worked out the way it has. Now, this industry can grow," says Hoekendorf, a member of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union Local 32. The terminals adds 40 acres of cargo capacity to the port, the fifth largest on the West Coast. Combined with last year's modernization at the south terminal, another $14 million is coming to the local economy. The new terminal will help ease supply chain problems and shipping backlogs all along the West Coast. Construction also removed 250,000 tons of contaminated soil and sediment and added a state of the art.
