Description
Gabonese soldiers are training at one of the last French military bases in Africa, which has become a "shared camp" focused on training. The inscription "Military Academy" at the entrance of Camp de Gaulle in Libreville, now replaces that of the 6th Marine Infantry Battalion (6th BIMa), the French Army unit established in Gabon since 1975. This rewording is part of a broader movement in Africa, where the French army has withdrawn or handed over bases to local forces. “It is a French political decision that is taken and then implemented in liaison with the authorities,” says Colonel Bertrand Jacqmin, commanding officer of the 6th BIMa. “It's really about meeting the needs and requests of each country.” IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
