The incident happened near the intersection of East Hubbard Avenue and North Pearl Street around 2:30 a.m.
Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said a special duty officer observed gunshots being exchanged between a male standing outside a parking garage and at least two people inside a dark pickup truck.
The officer fired their weapon at least once, according to Albert, but no one was struck by the bullet.
Albert said the officer detained the male at the parking garage and recovered a firearm. The truck left the scene heading east on East Hubbard Avenue. Additional information on the truck was not immediately provided.
Albert said another officer was in the area of North 4th and Warren streets when they found an unresponsive man lying on the road. He was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
According to Albert, hospital staff said the man “does not appear” to have been shot and was unsure if his injury was related to the exchange of gunfire on Hubbard Avenue.
The case remains under investigation by the Columbus police major case unit.
