Description
The parents of a 12-year-old girl who was struck and killed by an unattended vehicle outside Washington Middle School last month are demanding answers and accountability, saying they will not stop until they get justice for their daughter.
Arsema Barekew was standing outside the school on March 6 when police say an unattended SUV rolled downhill and hit her. The sixth-grader died at the scene, which remains under investigation by the Seattle Police Department.
One month after her death, Arsema’s parents — Tigist Yitna and Berihun Mekonnen — gathered outside Washington Middle School, joined by community members and supporters, to call for action.
“We are in the dark,” said Mekonnen, speaking through a translator. “We're demanding answers. Sometimes it feels like we’re still waiting for her to come home, because we do not have proper closure. No answers from the authorities.”
