March 26 on The Story: Yesterday, the Oregon Children's Theatre announced that it will begin a hiatus Sept. 1 for all programming — and whether they'll ever return depends entirely on whether they can meet a $1 million fundraising goal in the months ahead. For 35 years, the company has provided an outlet for children with the backing of donations and ticket sales. Financial troubles started even before the pandemic, OCT says, but these past few years have been especially rough. And they're not alone: a number of performing arts organizations in Portland say they are just barely holding on, with audiences slow to return and the problem exacerbated by a long-term disinvestment in the arts.
