March 11 on The Story: Two years ago, the Oregon Legislature embarked on an effort to fix the state's struggling public defense system and stop criminal defendants from going unrepresented. But data shows that the problem has only gotten worse, and there's mounting criticism of the state's six-year plan to address the problem. A recent analysis from the Oregon Judicial Department pointed out glaring flaws with that plan, finding that it would "significantly increase the magnitude and duration of the unrepresented crisis." At the same time, the state is two years away from phasing out one some of its most effective public defense providers.
