Description
Feb. 11 on The Story: In the late 1980s, Oregon became the first state in the nation to pass a sanctuary law, preventing state and local agencies from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Laws meant to protect immigrants in the state have only strengthened since then. But taking a cue from President Donald Trump's agenda, Republican lawmakers are pushing to create a broad list of exceptions for undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes. Under a bill they've proposed this session, those crimes would open the door for law enforcement in Oregon to work with agencies like ICE for detention and deportation.
