Description
The pet store Personal Beast in Southeast Portland became the scene of a brazen armed robbery Thursday evening. Police said a man came in and pointed a gun at a customer, then demanded money from the register. When an employee initially refused, the robber hit them in the head with the butt of the gun. Shortly after that, the gun went off.
“When he went to grab the register he had his finger on the trigger and he fired the gun into the floor. It (the bullet) ricocheted around on our cement floor back there but luckily no one was hit by the bullet,” said Sara Philbrook, the store owner.
Philbrook said the robber got away with about $150 in cash and left the store before police arrived.
None of the animals at the store, including Freddie the house cat, were injured in the incident. The employee injured is recovering at home.
“Having a gun in your face, having a gun shot near your feet, being that close to losing your life or your dog over $150 dollars, I think it’s still kind of sinking in for her,” explained Philbrook.
