Description
Sept. 26 on The Story: For working Oregonians, an additional $1,600 each year in income — no strings attached, ostensibly — is nothing to sneeze at. But a proposed measure that would hand that out as a tax credit or send it out as a check is drawing major backlash from both sides of the aisle. Oregon voters will see Measure 118 on their November ballots. If passed, it would institute a 3% tax on any corporation's total sales in Oregon, assuming they rise above $25 million. The money would then be distributed out equally among all state residents for roughly $1,600 each person per year. Proponents argue that this could help everyone in the state by putting money in their pockets, but many critics think it could upset the economy and the state budget alike.
