June 17 on The Story: Tomorrow will likely mark the largest nurses strike in Oregon history, as about 3,000 employees of the Providence health care system begin a three-day work stoppage. If you've been paying attention, there have been a lot of these kinds of things over the last several years — health care labor strikes or disputes that stop just short of a strike, plus conflicts between hospital systems and insurance companies. So, why do these things keep happening? To hear the hospitals tell it, this is mostly the result of sagging revenues since the pandemic, in some cases leading to millions of dollars of losses in a year.
