Description
April 3 on The Story: The disastrous collision of a huge cargo ship into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge last week, causing a deadly collapse, is causing many parties to reevaluate safety procedures and infrastructure in our region. That includes the Columbia Bar Pilots, who guide cargo ships and tankers from the Pacific Ocean into the mouth of the Columbia River, negotiating the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Their express purpose is to make that journey safely and to avert disaster if something goes wrong, and they're already taking into account some of what happened in Baltimore so that it doesn't happen here. We checked in with one of the pilots to learn more about what they do and how they've thus far managed to avoid similar incidents.
