Jan. 22 on The Story: Curt Melcher, director of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, didn't come to the agency as an administrator. He joined up back in 1985, right when The Goonies had just hit movie theaters, while he was still a biology student at the University of Oregon. From an inauspicious start doing field work, he climbed through the ranks over the next 40 years, including a decade as the agency's top official. This spring, he finally intends to retire. But first, he spoke with KGW environmental reporter Kale Williams to reflect on his career, what ODFW achieved in those years, and what challenges it still faces as the state tries to strike a balance between conservation efforts, industry interests and the public.
