Nov. 20 on The Story: Elected in a landslide in 2020, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, a man who ran on progressive values, was just in time to become the county's top prosecutor as both the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice protests took off — and at least some political groups have laid Portland's failures in addressing crime, often linked with addiction and homelessness, at his doorstep. Schmidt plans to run for reelection in 2024, but he faces a challenger from within his own office. Senior Deputy District Attorney Nathan Vasquez has been a prosecutor in Multnomah County for over two decades.
