Oct. 26 on The Story: If eleventh-hour negotiations don't produce a deal, the school year for Oregon's largest district could grind to a halt beginning next Wednesday, Nov. 1. That's when the union representing teachers at Portland Public Schools has planned to begin a strike if the district can't meet their demands on a new three-year contract. Right now, a deal doesn't seem to be forthcoming — as of the latest offers from both sides, a $60 million gulf separated the union's salary demands from what the district is willing to accept.
