Description
Oct. 26 on The Story: If eleventh-hour negotiations don't produce a deal, the school year for Oregon's largest district could grind to a halt beginning next Wednesday, Nov. 1. That's when the union representing teachers at Portland Public Schools has planned to begin a strike if the district can't meet their demands on a new three-year contract. Right now, a deal doesn't seem to be forthcoming — as of the latest offers from both sides, a $60 million gulf separated the union's salary demands from what the district is willing to accept. And salaries are just the tip of the iceberg. Tonight we dive into the details of the ongoing negotiations and explain what's keeping PPS and the union from averting a school shutdown.
