Description
Sept. 21 on The Story: For some time now, Portland's Bureau of Emergency Communications has been testing out artificial intelligence software to help dispatchers handle the overwhelming call volume they've been facing for the last several years. In October, the AI aid officially launches, and it'll be handling all non-emergency calls. Those calls in particular can have wait times of over an hour when they have to rely upon human dispatchers. While the prospect may alarm some Portlanders, BOEC said that the AI program should actually help dispatch clear calls more quickly.
