Description
Aug. 8 on The Story: When Republican lawmakers (and one Independent) shut down the Oregon Senate for six weeks earlier this year by walking out, hanging over their heads were rules newly approved by voters meant to prevent them from doing exactly that. Measure 113 says that lawmakers who get 10 or more unexcused absences can't hold the same office again next term. Republicans have argued that the language of the measure allows them to run in 2024, but not the following term in 2028, but they've been awaiting a determination from the Oregon secretary of state on how she'll interpret it. Her decision came down Tuesday, and it's likely to be just the beginning of a legal battle that will stretch on for some time.
