July 28, 2023 on The Story: Without much fanfare on Friday, one of Oregon's most enduring quirks effectively became a thing of the past. For weeks, Gov. Tina Kotek has had a bill on her desk that would give Oregonians the choice of pumping their own gas instead of waiting for an attendant. She's held off on actually signing the bill while gathering feedback, but she had a deadline on Friday for submitting a list of bills that she wants to veto. Conspicuously absent from the list is the self-serve gas bill — meaning she either plans to sign the bill into law by next week, or it will go into effect without her signature.
