Description
Thousands of Portland residents congregated downtown to celebrate Juneteenth on Saturday.
The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas found out they were free, two months after the end of the Civil War and more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Some people in Portland found unique ways to celebrate the holiday over the weekend, including enjoying food and live music at Lillis-Albina Park. There was also a Black Liberation bike ride on Saturday morning.
"I think we’re choosing to do a fun and joyous thing," said Laryea Quaye, who organized bike ride the event.
