June 1, 2023 on The Story: The Federal Aviation Administration tracks close calls at airports around the country, known as "runway incursions." Without strict regulation, planes could be at risk of colliding with pilots going where they shouldn't, taking off or landing at the wrong times. Most airports report a low number of runway incursions annually — Portland International Airport reported three over the past three years — the Hillsboro Airport reported 30 between February 2022 and February 2023.
