Description
The Battle Ground Advance Jazz Band have won first place at the 2023 Kansas City Jazz Summit. Since 1997, Greg McKelvey has directed many award winning bands.
"Count Basie and Duke Ellington are the main big bands that we strive to emulate cause it swings. And we're all about swing," McKelvey said.
Clair Moss and the band went to Kansas City to compete.
"Jazz gives me an adrenaline. It's a sort of high. And I love chasing it," said Moss.
The Battleground community raised $24,000 dollars in a month to help the band attend. Bass player Dalon Goodwin took home the summits individual award.
"It feels really good 'cause that's all the work we put in, paying off. It was a really good moment," Goodwin said.
