Description
Dressed head-to-toe in black and carrying flaming torches, 40 faithful march through the historic streets of Ouro Preto, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, as part of the Fogareu Procession, a traditional Holy Week celebration re-enacting the arrest of Jesus.
They represent the Roman soldiers, known as "Farricocos", who arrested Jesus on the night of the Last Supper. The purpose of the garments was to allow them to atone for their sins without having to reveal their identity in public.
Hundreds of locals and tourists accompany the procession, which covers a distance of around three kilometers. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
